Sources and methodology
Every layer uses a named public source and keeps its own reporting period. The map does not combine unlike measures into a hidden "best state" score.
Important interpretation notes
Crime: FBI values represent reported offenses and can be affected by agency participation, reporting practices, and data revisions. They are not a direct measure of personal risk.
Costs and housing: Statewide medians and price indexes can hide substantial differences among cities, counties, and neighborhoods.
Income and employment: Household income is an earnings statistic. This release intentionally does not include state income-tax rules or tax rates.
