I wrote "Spinning Dreams in a Secret Space" about growing up next to somebody who is good at the thing everybody agrees is worth being good at. The sister in this song is the athletic star. There are trophies, and there is a shelf, and there is a whole vocabulary the family already knows how to speak. The dancer has none of that. What he has is an empty gym at midnight and a kind of grace nobody has a category for yet. Being overlooked is hard. Being overlooked while somebody you love is standing in the light for something adjacent to what you do is a stranger and lonelier feeling, and I do not think it gets written about much.
The story behind the song is why the space had to be secret in the first place. He is not hiding because he is ashamed of dancing. He is hiding because the moment it becomes visible, it enters a house where everything gets measured in gold and trophies, and he already knows his art will not survive that scoring system.
